I am a Pakistani, and realize the pain you people have suffered at the hands of the Pakistani Army. The sad part is that none of these butchers were tried for crimes against humanity. We in Pakistan were always told one part of the story. I hope more Pakistanis will accept the fact that the ir army did engage in a genocide and should have been punished for this. Perhaps its Allahs way of taking revenge that these blood hungry soldiers are ruling us once again.

HashmiJ@drte.com on Jul 3, 2000
I just saw and read the facts of this page. It will be very honest if you also describe to the public that what crimes were done by the so called "MukhtiBahini" during the war session? The Mukhti Bahini never killed and raped innocent people? They never looted and savaged property/people? Why don't you also show the pictures where your Bengali counterparts have entered many a houses and took young girls? And what they did to those girls.. ...You are such a case

I was a independant reporter in East Pakistan before ot became Bangladesh, and I find this site to show a very one- sided view of things. The maniacs in the Mukti Bahini commited appalling atrocities against Muslim Pakistanis, civilian Indians, and their own people. It's easy to settle many scores against someone you don't like in the 'name of freedom.' a site like this shows only one aspect of the struggle, without accepting the wrongs of Bangladeshi 'freedom fighters.' you will only (incomplete)

I am from Lahore, Pakistan. After visiting your site, I started feeling guilty. It's shame on us to think being muslim what we have done to another muslim nation. Can't just believe, that many women were raped. The soldiers who did all these disgusting work are rulling us today. I know You guys have lot of tolerance. If it would happen to us, we would probably be crazy.

I belong to Pakistan. I went through the site and the pictures showing the suffering of Bangladeshi people at the hands of Pak Army really moved me. It will really help the people of my generation in understanding the sufferings beared by the Bangladeshi people in their war for freedom, who were born after the war. Whatever our elders have done wasent right, and it is very difficult for you to ignore such a big disaster. The course of history cannot be reversed. There is one question that re(incomplete)

I am a Pakistani. I appreciate your effort in promoting your cause. To understand history one should have knowledge of the point of view of the other party. Yes, Pakistani troops also would have committed crimes but the role played by the Indian Troops during the war cannot be declined. Therefore the role of indians played in the war should also be taken into account.

Mr. Khan & other "Similar minded" Pakistanis:
You guys are a bunch of hot-headed, ignorant, arrogant morons. E. & W. Pakistan was like having NY & Texas as a country separated by the rest of the states. We won the majority in elections in 71 but were denied representation by the brutal Paki military junta, denied having our own language as the national language. Yes, we may be poor but free and happy, and we have some sort of democracy unlike Pakistan. Yes we have plenty of fish & it's good for health and keeps the brain cool. Do you think you can get away with anything in the name of religion? If you support freedom for Kashmir or Bosnia, why not Bangladesh? If you can't stand a Hindu, stop using the internet because it was developed mostly by people of other faith. Just see what kind of darkness Afghanistan is going into with Pakistan's help. Your allegation that non-Bengali Muslim women were tortured/raped by Indian army and the Mukti Bahini is a baloney, in fact, there were very few non-Bengalis in BD at that time (less than 1%), and If there was some torture, it was in response to the brutal killings of Pak forces, and we regret that. But I am horrified that you guys have no sympathy over the murder thousands of innocent Bangladeshis where more than 85% were Muslims like you. Shame on you.

To the people who developed this site: Keep up the good work. Allah hafez

Thanks to everyone who maintains this site. It is really amazing to find how even in year 2001, some people support killing fellow human beings in the name of religion! Mr Khan and others, how do you validate killing Hindus just because they are ... and how do you justify killing fellow muslim brothers along with them? Just because we were Hindus 1000 years ago? Shame on you ... remember your blue blood and blindness about your religion will take you no where.

We don't believe that we are dirt w/o your support. Do you know that without the support of East Bengal, you would not have gotten Pakistan? Even Punjab did not vote for division. In fact we were turning into dirt while we stayed with you ... because you were robbing us in the name of running our country and in the name of religion. You back stabbed us ... not we. We stood up for what is right. That's why we got our freedom. We had nothing to gain or to feel proud staying with you. We don't care if we are poor ... we are happy human beings. We know what our roots are and we feel proud of our Bengali culture. We are pious muslims but unlike you, we do not intend to turn our coutry into a religious black hole of darkness.

How do you relate Bengalis in Karachi & Democracy? It only shows that you know nothing about political systems. You people still live in the middle age where the strong and powerful still runs the show. What have you gained in the last 50 years after you got your independence? Military might?!! Look what is happenning in your country with all the arms you have. Why are muslims killing muslims? Having an A-bomb? What will you do with that? Drop it on Hindus? Do you think you'll survive after that? But we will. We are the most liberal muslim country in the world ... and that is a big achievement. We have thrown out the military from our society (and you?). We still have a lot to do and we are doing it. One day we'll surpass you in everything, just keep watching!!!

I am a bihari origin and my family was
living in shantahar near bogra in bangladesh by that time. Though most of
our family men and women were killed by mukti bahinis but i dont have any feeling of hatred against my bengali fellows whether hindu or muslim. The reason is it was a particular time of violence during 1971 and never recurred any hostility against biharis and bengalis ever after that. Though still a number of biharis living in bangladesh.

Look at our country pakistan every day on an average 10-15 peoples are killed
in the name of shia vs sunni, mohajir vs patahan, punjabi vs pathan, pathan qabilah vs another patahn qabilah, baloch qabilah vs another balock qabilah.......etc.
yes there are a number of bengalis living in karachi and think this is the 3rd largest bengali city in the world. Hats off to these hard working bengalis
who earned valuable dollars for our country. without these labours our industry will collapse.

On advice of some friends of mine, I visited certain sites on internet to read about Bengali people's claims about 'untold atrocities' perpetrated by Pakistan army in 1971, and their demand for international justice against these 'crimes'. Many of the Bengalis' claim is that, the Pakistan army killed 3 million, 30 lakhs people, in nine months besides many other 'wrong-doing'. According to them, the death and distraction caused by the Pakistani forces only equaled that of World War II. This has been the claim going on for the last thirty years. I think, I need to say something as an unfortunate Pakistani, and it is up to my Bengali brothers to listen to, or not to.

Atrocity on any ground, in any form, on any pretext is condemnable. There is no doubt about it. And atrocity is atrocity, whether incurred on small scale or on large scale, whether involving a few individuals or involving state machinery. Atrocities generally occur in state of war, when killing and getting killed take precedence over any other sane thinking and humanism.

In 1971, there was a war - a civil war - the war that destroys all civility, gives rise to hatred, escalates killing instincts. That was the thing happened in war area. I know, all this was unlikable, undesirable and utterly condemnable. What happened cannot be supported under any pretext. But the claim of 30 lakhs people losing lives! Three million people?!? Is this a misprint or genuine demand of the Bengalis? Can I believe this?

I was thinking, how is it possible that, in Kashmir seven lakh Indian soldiers fighting insurgencies for about 13 years, resulting in killing of about 50,000 Kashmiris, but less than one lakh Pakistani force (as we know, 90000 disgraced Pakistani returned after fall of Dhaka) killed 3 million people in just nine months? Though many of you may contest, but it is a internationally accepted fact that, about seven lakhs, that is 0.7 million, Indian forces are deployed in Kashmir, and the armed insurgency is on for long 13 years.

I was in real quandary. Then, just as a God-sent, came this week's The Newsweek International (August 27, 2001) with the cover story "Asia's War Over History". This story gave me a lot of logic, and a bit of strength to understand the truth.

The story states, "thousands of civilians massacred by Pakistani troops". Elsewhere it states that, up to 300,000 Chinese were killed by Japanese Imperial Army soldiers in what is known as the most infamous atrocities in modern times, "The Rape of Nanking". The story also gives a figure of 500,000 people massacred in 1965 in Indonesia after Suharto came into power, which CIA of America describes "as one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century".

The August 13, 2001 issue of the Newsweek's cover story "Facing the Grisly Past" tells us that Khmer Rouge of Cambodia killed 1.7 million people in 1974. That country is still traumatized. Thousands of human skulls and bones can still be seen in pictures of that country. As against 1.7 million internationally accepted figure of Cambodian massacre, our Bengali brethren claim that Pakistanis had killed 3 million people. Are the pictures of Bangladesh as grisly as that of Cambodia? At least I've not so far seen any such pictures, full of skulls, in any international magazines and newspapers.

So, I think our Bengali brethren's claims are not based on hard facts, but on emotions, and probably on mal-intentions to linger on the bitterness in the Bengalis' minds. Though I believe that, atrocities are always un-acceptable, but the horrendous figures put forward by my brothers are not probably factually tenable.

I do also feel that, as demanded by Bengalis, the case should be heard by International court or any appropriate international body to settle this voluptuous, huge claim once for all.

With love,

The little girl and her brother

Dennis Ritchie: The Unpublished Interview

I used to work for International IT Magazine named PC Quest Bangladesh. In September 2001, and I realized that it would make a great piece if I could manage an interview from Dennis Ritchie (the father of Unix Operating System and C Programming Language).

On the 8th day of September I sent him the questions by email and he replied back on the 9th!! And a few hours after that the TWIN TOWERS collapsed..

The interview ultimately remained unpublished (Thanks to the Editor!). After a decade I thought the transcript was lost. Luckily, I found a copy today..

THE INTERVIEW

1. You fathered Unix and C Language, two of the most successful creations in the history of computing. How do you explain and evaluate their success?

In large part it was good fortune. Unix and C appeared together, and of course they complemented and drew strength from each other. But there were some specific reasons, and among them are--

We made our first distributions on a class of machines, and actually a particular machine, the Digital PDP-11, that became popular. The 1970s saw the emergence of the "minicomputer", which was more affordable than earlier mainframes, and could be acquired by a department in a university or a company and avoided the central computer center that was the norm then.

Unix demonstrated interesting technical ideas and structures. It encouraged interactive computing in an era in which it was less available and normal than it is now. In particular, the "software tool" approach, particularly explored by programmers and authors like

Kernighan and Plauger, particularly when coupled with some nice text-processing ideas. Very little that we did was completely innovative, and all of our writing about Unix and for that matter C is careful to pay tribute to their predecessors, but the combination was attuned to the times and did have some interesting ideas of its own.

Also, although the software we produced was not "free" in the modern sense (it was licensed and controlled), on the kinds of machines on which interesting things were being done, it was readily available to university and company researchers and engineers. So even in the 1970s it achieved some currency.

A bit after we started (late 1970s) we also pioneered in portability of operating systems, and so that Unix and C were able to take part in the next wave of development after the minicomputer: the powerful workstation which in many environments was useful to a single person or a very small group. So companies like Sun were able to adapt Unix as a basis for their software. This was helped by the work at the University of California at Berkeley, which in turn was supported by the US government via ARPA.

Somehow we managed to find the "sweet spot" in this period of growth. It was not planned in advance, and was originally undertaken as a research project, but things worked out well.

2. Do you think that C will be replaced by newer languages within this decade?

This is already happening, given C++ and more recent descendants like Java and now C#. But perhaps more important, higher-level scripting languages like Perl and its cousins will become even more used, and probably things like VB may actually be most used of all. For "low-level" use C will remain around for quite a while, even if it is increasingly used as the unseen high-level assembler in which many of these tools are written.

3. If you were given the chance, what major changes you would have brought into C?

I do not have many real regrets about C. The idea of function prototypes, pushed into C by C++'s example, is something that I wish I had done myself earlier. The structure of declarations (in which "declarators" mimic the expressions in which the variables will appear) is often regarded with suspicion, and I understand why they are difficult. There are of course lots of silly little things that continue to cause trouble and are still argued about in discussion groups (including the standards committee.

4. Do you think that the current Standardized C holds enough features to be considered as a complete language?

It has enough features, and in fact the new standard (often called C99) may have more than I would have wanted. One fact that is important to realize is that C was intended just as a language tool, not itself as a complete environment that includes graphics and networking. It does have a standard library of very basic and generic I/O and some other things. The C standard itself, even when fully implemented, is not a programming environment, just a part of one.
The intent was and is to describe a language that could be of use in many environments and isn't really tied to just one.

5. How do you evaluate Linux? What are things do you find missing in Linux?

I think the Linux phenomenon is great. Obviously it is done by others, and has its own development line and goals, but fundamentally its success (as well as those of other independent efforts, like the BSD systems) is part of the Unix heritage. I don't take credit for it, but I'm not jealous either.

6. After Unix, we know that you headed the Plan 9 and later Inferno Project. What is so special about Plan 9 and Inferno? What were the expectations behind Inferno and how is it proceeding to its goals?

I didn't head either of these in the sense of creating them; they owe to Ken Thompson, Rob Pike, and Phil Winterbottom. The operating-system ideas in both are generalizations of the Unix idea of supplying resources as objects that look like files: things have names that exist in a tree-shaped hierarchy, and have attributes like permissions and ownership that are just like those in a Unix or Linux file tree. The new thing in both is the increased abstraction and
generalization of what is behind the name: entities that behave, to a program, much as a plain disk file might, but actually have a server behind them that can be much more interesting. This is most interesting in a distributed environment in which you can use remote resources transparently.

Inferno added the idea of the "virtual operating system": it can run either stand-alone as OS on raw hardware, or as a virtual machine under an commodity OS like Windows or a Unix variety. It uses compiler technology like that of Java or the new Microsoft MSIL.

Both are doing OK, and the ideas have been quietly influential, but it's certainly true that neither has had the effect that Unix itself did (over, say, 1974-1984). It would have been great to have one or both be a huge commercial success, but I think that both have achieved their goals, if not wildest hopes. Both are available. Plan 9 is freely available; trial versions of Inferno are free; supported versions with the full source use a subscription-based scheme.

The world has changed greatly since the time Unix (or C) started and began to grow as an important factor in computing.

7. How do you evaluate C# and Java? Do you think C# has made a good progress from C?
I will pass on this, except to reiterate what I just said at the end of the last answer, and to observe that both C# and Java have important commercial interests involved in propagating them. Both clearly take a lot from C (for which I'm happy), but are at a higher level both in terms of usual implantation techniques and the operations and safety facilities available.

8. What is your vision on the operating system of the future?

If I had a really clear vision of this, I might be re-thinking my own future. It does seem that the traditional OS area, or ecology, is rather fully-occupied, and so thinking about new, general-purpose systems like Unix for a centralized machine or server, or for the desktop, or a laptop is probably pointless. There should be interesting things to do in distributed systems that communicate over channels (often wireless) that can be slow, or fast with large latency, or unreliable, or all of these. Among the things we're looking at is how to do this seamlessly. I'll let the people doing the work publish when they're ready.

9. What is your current project and what are your plans for the future?

I'll avoid this, but see the last answer.

How to edit your Canon DSLR / Quicktime movies in Windows?

Editing Apple Quicktime Movies (Files that ends with .MOV) is a big pain in Windows. All the new Canon HD DSLR Camera record their movies in this format. So if you own one, you have no choice but using Quicktime!!

Finally, this morning, I've successfully cracked the code!!! So what's the deal? You must have three tools installed in your PC.

Here's the List

1. Quicktime 7.x Pro
2. Xilisoft MOV Converter (Option, Required for Faster Conversion to other formats)
3. Windows Movie Maker (Optional, Required for Title Animation)

Quicktime can be obtained freely. The free version is just a player. Get the serial number and convert your Quicktime to Pro edition. Now open the MOV file with Quicktime player. Use cut, copy, past, delete to merge two MOV files or delete somepart from it. Now save it as a complete MOV file (No referrence). Selection sliders are a bit tricky to find. The following pictures shows how they look in reality...

After saveing the MOV file, now determine the purpose. If you want to upload then go to the file menu and click export. For YouTube select Export "Movie to MPEG-4" and Use "Broandband - Medium".

If you want to create a movie with many clips and effects save it as AVI. AVI takes a lot of space, so must have enough sapce before proceeding.

Sometimes you need to convert the MOV files faster. In that case, use Xilisoft to get things done faster.

I prefert to convert my Canon 5D Mark II into MPEG1 (.mpg) or (.mp4). MP4 needs special software where MPEG1 can be played anytwhere.

  • Write an application addressing to "The Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police".

  • You must state your cell phone number in the application.

  • You must know your Police Station (Thaana). Sometimes, even the police officers are not sure which is the right "Thaana" you belong to.

Process:
  1. Go to the DMP HQ, follow the sign for the One-Stop Service Center.
  2. Submit your application.
  3. Get the token.
  4. Someone will contact you from the Local Police Station (Thaana) and make an appointment. You must be present at home (The address you stated in your passport) that time.
  5. After physical verification, you should go back to the same place to collect the certificate. The collection date is already stated on your token.

Important Info
  • Every thing is based on the permanent address you mentioned in your passport. So if there's any issue with that, resolve it beforehand.

The God of Light
